Where PSS®E is strongest
RMS simulation is efficient for broad network assessment, longer-duration dynamic behaviour and large sets of credible contingencies. It remains central to many connection and planning studies.
Where PSCAD is strongest
EMT simulation captures fast control interactions, switching behaviour and detailed converter dynamics. It is especially important in weak-grid conditions and where inverter-based resources dominate.
Avoid tool-led analysis
The study question should determine the tool—not the other way around. Define the risk, required fidelity and acceptance criteria before building the study scope.
Use results together
Differences between RMS and EMT results can provide useful insight. A coordinated approach helps teams understand where simplified representations remain valid and where detailed controls drive system behaviour.
