Grid connection risk is rarely isolated to the connection workstream. It can affect equipment procurement, project schedule, financing assumptions and even the commercial viability of the project.
1. Unclear network constraints
Connection point strength, congestion, planned network changes and neighbouring projects can materially change the study outcome. Establish the network context early and keep it current.
2. Misaligned models and design
Studies are only useful when model assumptions reflect the intended plant. Poor alignment between OEM models, electrical design and control settings often leads to repeated analysis.
3. Late OEM engagement
Key compliance outcomes can depend on inverter or turbine controls. Early OEM ownership of model quality, parameter limits and tuning expectations reduces programme risk.
4. Weak interface management
Grid connection crosses multiple technical and organisational boundaries. Define responsibilities, information flows and decision authority clearly.
5. Underestimating R1 and R2
Registration and commissioning evidence should be planned during the application stage. A project that treats R1 and R2 as future activities can discover costly gaps too late.
